Today, I’m facing the consequences of my laziness.

There really is no good way to start off the day when it begins at 2:14pm. Okay, true that I did sleep at an unthinkable hour last night due to my obsession with some shows on TLC (netflix!), but even after nine hours of sleep, my eyelids are still fighting to stay open. And so, I’m attempting to fight my drowsiness with a big pot of tea and a little reflection on this past weekend.

One of the highlights of my weekend was attending a fashion show put on by an organization on campus – it was amazing! There was a lot of cultural dancing incorporated into the show, which fascinated me because in the past, I used to participate in quite a bit of traditional Chinese dance – that is, until I went on my growth spurt and no longer fit in aesthetically with the rest of the dance group. Yes, I was kicked out because my hormones kicked in. The rest of my weekend consisted of lots of eating with friends and spending time with the people who I rarely see during the week. Overall, it was a great deal of fun… but now I have to cram for two exams this coming week. Let’s go glycosidic linkages!

Today, I couldn’t find my .htaccess.

Macs – aesthetically pleasing? Yes. Generally good with graphic design? Yes. Built for a coder? No. After four months of getting by with my Macbook, I’ve finally run into some major roadblocks. The main reason I’ve been able to get by without coding from scratch is due to WordPress’ backend – all the theme coding I can get to without using a FTP.

But now, after noticing some issues with my permalinks, I’ve invested quite a bit of time trying to find all the programs I used to use on my PC. Unfortunately, most of them aren’t compatible with this overpriced piece of aluminum. So, I’ve learned my lesson – looks are not everything – and the moment this laptop kicks the bucket, I’m returning to the world of PCs.

P.S. Thai Iced Tea makes everything slightly better :)

I’m not sure what it is about living on my own (well, somewhat on my own) but my eating schedule has been ridiculously irregular lately. Sometimes I find myself waking up at 3:04am with a grumbling stomach and an empty fridge. At this point, I either roll over and grit my teeth at my stomach’s protests, or grudgingly drag myself out of bed to scrounge up some stale pretzels. That’s why from now on, I vow to keep a supply of leftover pizza handy – freshman 15 be damned, I’ll care about the extra fat blobs in the morning. For now, I’m going to enjoy the encroaching drowsiness brought on by my food coma.

Today, I found time to jot down my thoughts.

Although I haven’t been blogging as regularly as I had hoped, I’m still mentally logging all of the interesting (and not so interesting) events that occurred last month, and hopefully, I can permanently record them on my humble blog. I’m not going to lie and say I had the best month ever, but at least I’ve been able to take a lot out of it – for example, I’ve learned that I should never try counseling as a profession. Anyhow, I’ve decided that I’m going to take the first day of every month and reflect on the past month, as well as set some new goals – so here it goes.

January was a month that tested my patience, both academically and socially. In truth, I’ve never considered myself a great listener, but my periodic lashes this past month has shown me that listening is a skill not easily learned. If there’s something I took out of my 8th grade speech class, it’s that communication is a two-way street. Cheesy, but it sticks.

Hopefully in February I’ll be able to grow as a friend and a person – life isn’t exactly easy, especially in a high stress environment like school, and sometimes I will have to remind myself that we all need time to vent.

A little over a year ago, I moved away from the big ol’ state of Texas. Although I don’t care to revisit my high school memories, I still miss the friends that made those years a little more bearable. Surprisingly, I have been able to meet many people from Texas at my college (which generally doesn’t have too many out-of-state admissions) – and much to my chagrin, I have more of a southern accent than they do. I guess the South will always be a part of me, and hopefully, I’ll be able to return to visit in the future.

Although I no longer code anywhere close to the amount I did in high school, I have realized several unexpected benefits from my years of sitting in front of the computer. The most important, in my opinion, is my typing speed. Although last semester I rarely needed to take notes in class, this semester my laptop has been extremely useful. While I watch others around me struggle to record important facts and tidbits, I can only thank my well-trained digits that I don’t have to stress over incomplete notes. Yep – become a coder, you’ll thank yourself later.

Today, I don’t plan on sleeping much.

I’m not sure about the rest of the world, but I generally have issues sleeping. It’s been a problem for a couple of years now, but I can’t seem to shake my late night turning and tossing. Back when I was in elementary school, my mother would try to coerce me to sleep early – making me write essays on the negative consequences of no sleep as punishment. Although I now have some pretty interesting facts about insomnia under my belt, I still find myself awake at the most inopportune times. For example, today, at 12:56am, I am starting off Wednesday on a sour note. Even with a long day ahead of me, I can’t seem to stop obsessing over some things that were said to me during a few hours ago – specifically, slanderous comments directed at my personality. I won’t go into great detail, but I am quite frustrated that I could be possibly viewed in such a negative light. Perhaps I am being overly sensitive, and of course, the other party said these things out of anger – but there is always a sliver of truth in every comment. That’s what’s truly frightening, I suppose… and I believe I will take these next few hours until dawn breaks thinking doing some self-reflection.

Just thought I’d post a quick blog about the website – the backend coding of it at least. I’m sure most of you have already figured out that I’m using masonry.js for my formatting. Although it took me a little bit of time to figure out, I love it – works in most browsers and fairly straightforward. Right now I’m using the basic single column option (I just applied the CSS styling to my posts tags for WP inside the loop). I am aware that there are several WP themes that are available for free that also uses masonry.js (unfortunately I didn’t figure this out until after I had finished coding my theme), but I will probably post the source files for my theme sometime in the near future – I want to do some more extensive comment styling first!
